Golf Cart Safety Guidelines
Golf carts may be seen as spiffy little sport utility vehicles to help you get around on the course. But many do not realize that a large number of accidents that happen on the golf course result from the use of golf carts. While adults should know better, many get carried away when the kid in them comes out. Some are known for playing around by joyriding across the course or acting silly. Unfortunately, doing this has led to a number of injuries that could have been avoided. While it seems common sense to be safe on the course, the following tips can serve as reminders to help you stay safe while using a golf cart on the course.
- Ride in the cart appropriately by sitting down in the seat instead of standing. Body parts should be inside the cart instead of hanging over.
- When driving pay attention to where you are going and your speed. Slow down when making turns to avoid tipping over and avoid operating the cart if you have consumed alcohol.
- Any rules or proper etiquette posted by the golf course should be adhered to carefully. Take time to review speed limits and rules as far as where you are allowed to operate the cart on the course.
- Pay attention to any warning or caution signs that may be posted on the cart. This may also provide guidelines on how to use the cart properly to avoid injury. Such details should be reviewed before playing rounds on the course.
- Maintaining a safe speed while driving is important since many carts do not have seatbelts. Driving too fast may cause someone to fall out of the cart.
- Keep the cart on the course on in designated areas. Many carts are not designed to be used outside of the golf course; this is how a number of injuries happen when people are thrown off the cart when driving or riding in prohibited areas.
- Avoid racing or stopping abruptly. Not only do you increase chances of damaging property, you risk someone getting hurt or even ran into when around other parked carts.
- Broken or sprained ankles have resulted from people hanging their legs over while the cart is in motion. If you are wearing shoes with cleats on the bottom they can get caught in the ground easier when you are moving.
