A Guide for New Golfers: Choosing a Practice Facility
Picking out a practice facility to work on your game when you are just starting out is an important step. You need to have access to a location where you can work on all aspects of your game so you don’t have weak areas simply because you can’t practice those spots at your facility. Also, it would be ideal if the practice facility was close to your home or work so you could get out and work on your game as quickly as possible and fit it into your schedule.
When comparing different practice facilities and deciding which to make your preferred option, look for the following features:
- Full-length driving range. Some practice facilities don’t have the length to allow you to hit drivers as part of your routine, so try to find one that does have that option. You can simply ask at the desk about any rules preventing drivers from being used on the tee line.
- Putting green. You want to find a facility with a large enough green to work on your lag putting as well as your short putts. Also, check on the condition of the putting green to see if it is good enough to really get good practice in on the greens. A poorly conditioned green won’t do you a lot of good when working on your stroke, so hopefully you can find a facility that takes pride in their practice green.
- Bunker and chipping area. Not all facilities have an area to hit bunker shots or chip shots, so finding one that does is a great bonus. However, you might want to ask about their policy because some facilities charge an additional fee for the use of the short game area.
- Bulk discount. If you are going to be practicing a lot, it can save you money to find a practice range that offers discounts for regular customers. Those discounts might come in the way of a loyalty card or just a punch card that offers a free bucket of balls for every so many that you purchase.
Once you find a good practice facility, try to make it a habit to go on a regular basis and work on your game. With even a moderate amount of practice, you might be surprised at how quickly your game can improve. Get out there and get to work soon!
