Golf Swing Tips: How to Cure an Early Release
The early stages of the golf swing are intended to not only get the club swinging on the proper path, but also to build speed that can be unleashed at impact. Unfortunately, many golfers release the club early in the downswing and waste the potential energy they have built up earlier in the swing. In order to maximize your distance on the course, you will need to learn how to control the release so that all of the power that you have available is unleashed right at impact.
Timing the release correctly is a challenging part of the golf swing, and one element that many players never get right. Use the tips below to work on improving the timing of your release.
- Top hand leads the way. When an early release is taking away your power in the golf swing, it is usually your bottom hand to blame. For a right handed golfer, that means that the right hand is too active during the downswing. Ideally, the left hand will pull the club down toward impact and the right hand will only become engaged as the club is getting ready to strike the ball. Hitting a few soft shots with only your top hand on the club is a good way to learn the feeling of a proper release.
- Lower body drive toward the target. You should be using your legs in the downswing to drive toward the target and rotate the rest of your body through the shot. If your legs are passive early in the downswing, you won’t have any choice but to release the club early just to make contact with the ball. When you notice that an early release has become a problem, pay careful attention to how your lower body is working during the downswing to make sure it is doing its part correctly.
- Hit some chip shots. Believe it or not, practicing your chipping is a good way to learn the proper timing of the release in your full swing. Because a chip shot is basically a miniature version of your full swing, pay attention to how your hands are working when you chip the ball properly. After hitting a few good chip shots, go back to hitting some full shots while keeping that chipping motion in mind. Hopefully, the feeling will transfer over and you will be able to release the club through impact at exactly the right time.
