How to Get an Eagle: Learning from Professional Golfers
Getting an eagle is one of the most exciting accomplishments in all of golf. An eagle is defined as scoring two under par on a single hole – so, scoring a three on a par five, a two on a par four, or a one on a par three. While it is possible to get an eagle on a par three or four, the most likely occurrence is to achieve an eagle on a par five. If you have never before made an eagle and would like to break through that barrier, focus your attention on the par fives for your best chance at success.
Below are a few pro tips that will help you in your quest to make your first-ever eagle –
- Hit the fairway. When you reach a short par five that you think might allow you to make your first eagle, don’t get ahead of yourself. In order to have the best chance to reach the green in two shots – and then make your putt for eagle – you need to get your ball into the fairway. Take the hole one shot at a time and pick a good target for your tee shot. Once you hit a nice tee shot down the middle of the fairway, you can turn your attention to reaching the green in two.
- Be aggressive. You aren’t going to be able to make an eagle by being conservative and playing away from the hole with your second shot. Most par fives have some kind of hazard or trouble guarding the green, but you need to take on the challenge and try to hit a great shot that finds the green and avoids the trouble. This strategy will likely get you in trouble from time to time, but it is the only way to break through with your first eagle.
- Don’t leave the putt short. When you do manage to get your ball onto the green in two shots on a par five, the last thing you want to do is leave your eagle putt short of the hole. You get very few opportunities to make an eagle on the golf course, so you want to make sure your putt has a chance to find the cup when you are in eagle position. Pick out a putting ling that will allow you to be aggressive and run the ball a foot or two past the hole if it does happen to miss. If you stay aggressive and confident, that first eagle could fall in sooner than you think!
