You Should Be Able to Keep Up with the Pace of Play
Pace of play is an important part of golf, as the pace that you play at affects everyone else on the holes behind you. In order to keep golf an enjoyable experience for everyone who loves to play, all golfers bear the responsibility of keeping up a good pace. There is a common misconception among some golfers that you have to be a good player to play at a proper pace – that is not true. In fact, there are many beginning golfers that keep up nicely, while there are plenty of good golfers who play far too slow.
If you are just getting started in the game, it might benefit you to read a few tips on how to keep up a good pace on the golf course.
- Mind your own business. One way to slow down your pace on the golf course is to get too caught up in what the others are doing in your group. If you spend too much time watching the other players go about their business, you will fall behind on things like getting your yardage and picking a club. It is fine to watch them hit their shots, but remember to do your own preparation at the same time.
- Cut out the practice swings. For the most part, practice swings are just a waste of time. Your swing isn’t going to change in any significant way while you are on the course, so there is no sense in making two or three swings before you actually hit the shot. The only time you should really feel the need to make practice swings is when you find your ball in an awkward or unusual lie. In that case, it is worth taking a practice swing or two to get comfortable. Other than that, however, leave the practice swings on the range and get on with the shot.
- Don’t over-analyze your putts. Putting is often when many golfers slow down and cause backups on the course. You need to take a moment to read the slope of your putt, but don’t overdo it. In fact, you can hurt your putting performance by reading too much into the line of your putt. Instead, get a quick look from both behind the ball and behind the hole, pick out a line, and make a good stroke.
