Hints on Escaping from Deep, Thick Rough
You know the feeling – you hit a good drive down the fairway, only to see it bounce a couple of times and disappear into the deep rough. Just that quick, you can go from excitement at the possibility of having an easy approach shot into the green, to fear of even being able to get out of the rough at all. Golf can be a cruel game, and seeing your ball nestle down into the long stuff is one of the worst feelings of all.
The good news, however, is that there is hope even when you are down at the bottom of the long grass. By going in with a good approach and some basic technique, you should at least be able to get your ball up and out of the rough – if not onto the green.
Consider the following hints the next time you have to deal with some difficult rough:
- Get out first. Above all else, you need to get your ball back on the short grass. If you aren’t sure that you can reach the green from the rough you are in, layup and try to hit it close with your next shot. A bogey isn’t that big of a deal – but a triple bogey is.
- Choke down on the club. The grass standing behind your ball is the biggest issue you face in getting your shot up and out of the rough. If you choke down on the grip an inch or two, you will make the club play a little shorter, and you may have an easier time missing that rough behind the ball. Also, play the ball a little further back in your stance to make it easier to hit cleanly.
- Expect a flatter shot. Backspin is what makes the ball climb high into the air, and you aren’t going to get much spin at all out of the long rough. That means that you should expect to see a lower-flying shot which bounces and runs out when it hits the ground. Take this into account when you are planning the shot you want to hit. If you are trying to get to a hole located just over a bunker, you might want to think twice and take a safer line. Remember, getting back in play and out of trouble should always be your first goal when dealing with long rough.
