How To Develop A Good Short Game Technique In 5 Steps
In golf, it doesn’t really matter if you can hit the ball miles down the fairway. It is more important to be able to get the ball in the hole. This comes from having a precise short game and obviously you have to remain calm in those situations. You have to remain focused and make sure everything flows – remember, short game is more about the rhythm and less emphasis is placed on technique! If you want to improve your scores today, then you must be able to polish up your short game. Here are 5 tricks that would make your life a lot easier.
- Select the right club
- Commit to every shot
- Firm wrists
- Control trajectory
- Go for the flattest part of the green
The correct technique and rhythm are always important. But choosing the right club is also essential. In different situations, you need to use different clubs to adapt to it. For example, if you were in the thick rough, it would be better to use a sand-wedge than using a 7-iron, as you need to dig the ball out. Think before you act! Always evaluate the situation carefully and then choose your club – you don’t have to rush.
Everyone is guilty of being unsure of their shot and just sort of slows the swing down midway. The results are generally pretty bad – we would hit it fat or blade it 40 yards past the green. That’s the beauty of golf, so make sure you are committed to hitting your shot. Don’t hesitate and don’t have second thoughts. Swing up and swing down; that’s all you need to do.
In most cases, you really need to lock your wrists, so that you can guarantee a solid contact at the golf ball. Releasing your wrists would bring all sorts of trouble into play. Yes, the top players do release their wrists in a chip shot, but they practice all day long everyday and you don’t! Minimise the chances of error and just hold the wrists firm through out the swing.
Before you hit your shot, make sure you assess how you want the ball to react. It could be a high, soft shot, or a low-running chip. As long as you have a clear shot in mind, you will find it much easier to get close to the hole.
This is the least known short-game tip, but it is effective! Apart from going close to the hole, you should look for the flattest area on the green. Try and put your ball there and you will give yourself a bigger chance for a par!
Hope this guide has helped you in developing as a golfer!
