Getting Out of Wet Sand is as Easy as Pie
It is always a challenge every time you find your ball in a bunker to get out of the sand in a single shot – and to get the ball as close to the hole as possible. That challenge can be increased if the sand is wet and packed firmer than usual. In this case, you will need to adjust your technique in order to successfully get the ball up into the air and out of the bunker. The good news is that this shot can certainly be conquered, and it might not even be as difficult as you are thinking.
The tips below are designed to help you escape a wet sand bunker in a single stroke –
- Use your chipping motion. When the sand is dry, you probably opt for an explosion shot most of the time. This is a shot where the club enters the sand well behind the ball and you use the blasting of the sand to lift the ball out of the bunker. This kind of shot doesn’t work nearly as well when the sand is wet because of how much denser and heavier the sand is. In this case, you will want to use your regular chipping motion and try to make clean contact with the ball, just as if you were chipping of a firm fairway lie.
- Make sure you have room. Often, this shot will come out lower than an explosion shot would, so take that into account when you are picking your target line. If the lip of the bunker in front of you is too high, consider playing away from the hole just to make sure you can get out of the sand on your first shot. Trying to hit a high shot from wet sand is a challenge for any golfer and can often lead to poor results.
- Keep your body quiet. Moving around with the rest of your body during the swing you make in the bunker will add to the challenge of making clean contact. After you take your stance, try to hold the majority of your body still during the shot while moving your shoulders and arms to swing the club back and through. The better you get at maintaining a static position during the shot, the more consistent and reliable your results are going to be when playing from wet sand.
