Golf Pitching Drills For Improving The Consistency Of Your Shots
A pitching shot is where the ball needs to travel high and land without too much rolling or bouncing. The following drill will help you mostly with your stance; and the final two with your grip and swing respectively.
- Use the right club
- Set your feet no more than ten inches apart
- Stand with ball in the centre of your feet
- Twist your body into an open stance
- Bend from your waist, not your knees
- Lean forward and slightly left
- Push the grip forward
- 50% power on the swing
The best club to use when pitching is either a pitching wedge or a sand wedge. Most beginners prefer the sand wedge because of their familiarity with the club.
Your feet should be relatively close together. Think of yourself as maintaining a ‘tight’ stance when getting ready to pitch.
The ball should be lined up with the exact centre of your feet. This will ensure that the low point of the club connects the ball in the right place. Be sure to stance fairly close to the ball too.
Once you have yourself in this position, twist your body slightly left. Your torso will now be facing slightly left of the target you are aiming for.
Where you would normally bend with your knees, bend with your waist. Your knees will still be slightly flexed, but most of the bending should be done with your waist.
Without actually lifting your heels, lean slightly forward so as to have most of your weight on the front of your feet. Put about 60-65% of your body weight on the left foot and maintain this weight throughout the swing (no weight distribution).
Your grip will be pushed slightly forward. Many players find it easier to push their grip forward before securing the grip. Do this if it makes you feel more comfortable.
The furthest you want the ball to travel is about 40 yards. For this reason, don’t swing more than 50% of your normal power. As you practice your pitching, you will learn to gauge the power needed to attain a certain distance.
Pitching is all about maintaining that tightness. This is what gets the ball high up and brings it back down forcefully; preventing it from bouncing or rolling. The pitch shot is highly technical, so make sure you practice it before trying it out in a game setting.
