How To Improve Your Pitching Technique: 5 Things You Didn't Know
As a golfer, you would realise that hitting the ball as far as possible isn’t the only thing that you need to focus on sooner or later. To be able to post a good score, you really need solid short game and make sure that you can hit the ball close to the hole. That would require great pitching technique and some practice.
Working on your pitching is not that difficult and everyone is capable of doing it. Here are 5 things that you didn’t know that could improve your pitching quickly.
- Hands behind the ball
- Grip down
- Grip softer
- Ball in the back of the stance
- Quiet head
One of the unconventional techniques would be to put your hands behind the ball at setup. This would add some loft to your club and it will generate more spin. Apart from that, it would encourage the usage of ‘bounce angles’ on your golf club, which would also give you a bit more spin and yet maintain a lower launch angle.
As I’ve said though, this is not conventional and may be a bit difficult. However, if you can master the skills, you can certainly make yourself a much better golfer!
I’ve seen too many amateurs just grip the club as if they are hitting a full shot. That’s going to reduce the control that you have and you are most certainly going to struggle with pitch shots. Grip down an inch or two and you will find pitching so much easier.
You’ve heard the T.V. commentators say it all the time. It’s a term called ‘soft hands’ and that is exactly what you need when you are pitching. By having softer hands, you will essentially gain more control on your ball. That is perhaps the most important aspect of pitching and you must work on this!
If you want a more solid, crisper strike then you are going to need to put the ball behind the stance so that you can deliver a descending strike. It’s a great technique to learn and it works every time! You will feel a lot more confident with pitching and you can control the distance a lot better as well
If you were struggling with pitching, then it would be a good idea to keep your head still throughout the swing. This would encourage a more solid hit down the ball and you won’t be hitting the ball anywhere but the middle of the club!
